Coat of Wax

We had our ultrasound last Thursday and all looks good with our little baby!! We are truly grateful and know that there are many who do not always have the beauty of this news. It was with a heart of relief I walked out of our midwives office. Jake and the boys came along too. I told Tyler that he use to be in my belly, just like his little brother or sister is now, "I don't want to go in there" he said! We all had a good laugh at that one! This baby looks just like Tyler and Luke did. Long forehead and pudgy nose! I'm in love!

Our little Sweet Pea has quite a lot happening! Her brain is designating specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, vision, and touch. Some research suggests that she may be able to hear my voice now, (and my own research almost guarantees she can hear my voice because I think I've been yelling a lot lately, I have to work on that one). Just the typical, "stop fighting", "share your trains", "if you do that again, you're going to your room", "I said stay out of the toilet" and such! She is measuring up to 6 inches, head to bottom. I'd say that sounds about right because almost like clockwork, at 10 pm each night I feel lots of movement. Must be a night owl like someone else I know! Hair on her scalp is sprouting, (cute). A waxy protective coating called the "vernix caseosa" is forming on her skin to prevent it from pickling in the amniotic fluid. What a GREAT invention God...makes sense because they're swimming in there for almost 10 months, they would be shriveled for LIFE without that coat of wax!

Better get to bed....Luke has been sick, lots of throwing up the past 24 hours. Bless his heart, he and Tyler were such troopers with me today. We were on the road a total of 5 hours. I drove to Philadelphia to pick up the train table I won/stole on ebay! This thing is amazing....came with tons of tracks and 40 trains!! (We are SET for the next 2 years as far as gifts are concerned). I had packed some snacks, Thomas tapes, puppies, nuks and left over nap time. They slept on the way down. We stopped at Panera on the way home and then, as if Luke was waiting until we got home, we walked in the door and he threw up everywhere....great timing I will say! Just finished changing his sheets again, it's almost 11 pm. I hope it's just a 24 hour thing. I feel so badly for him because it scares him when he throws up so much at one time. On the other hand, I love being there for my babies when they are sick. I remember how my Mom was just so sweet when I was sick, (and all the time for that matter). But you remember that wonderful "special" feeling when you were being taken care of? I made Luke some cinnamon sugar toast with milk this morning, that's what my Mom use to give me. The taste of that still takes me back. If you're still reading all my ramblings, I'm curious, what did your Mom do for you when you were sick?

Here's to a good night's sleep!

Skarloey

ok, in this moment it is painfully obvious that I watch entirely TOO MUCH THOMAS because this very thought went through my brain as I saw this train go by...."wow, he has nice eyebrows."

a visit that is more then a visit

...it is a time of inspiration and delight, a time for me to not feel alone in my mothering, (or odd for that matter). We parent in similar ways and it is hilarious for me to watch "myself" through my dear friend Jeane. On this particular morning, as I was preparing to head out, I realized I forgot I was having my sisters 2 year son for the day. I wasn't about to cancel my plans, plus Chase is a joy to have around.....so I packed up my three little guys and off we went to Reading, (Donut Man, fishes, nuks and puppy's in tow....just in case).

Christopher and Mommy.

Annie dear. Sweet Mackenzie.

We had a wonderful morning thanks to the amazing hospitality, which she no doubt has learned from her Mother! The children ate their lunch while watching "Thomas", something Tyler STILL talks about to this day, (as in he mentioned it again this morning). Jeane served me this wonderful meal and I did my best to not scarf it down. She sent me home with some fabulous birthday gifts: a lovely bracelet, a maternity sweater in the sweetest shade of green and my favorite, the best, hold-me-in-make-me-feel-somewhat-normal maternity undershirt....that I have since been wearing most of the week, (only to remove for laundering!!). Thank you Jeane for such a wonderful time. I always look forward to our times together.
You are dear to me and my forever friend!!

Ladies Tea

Last month I had the privilege of honoring a friend that was visiting from Australia. Miranda and I went to church together and I came to respect and admire her and her husband Joe and their 10 children! She is a woman to be esteemed. I invited some of her friends and we had a lovely morning together.
From Left to Right: Sharon Martin, Rachel Stoltzfus, Charity Lapp, Miranda Riddington, Barb Smucker and MaryAnn Stoltzfus.
I had such fun planning the menu.
I love to entertain, but mostly bless. I made homemade scones and lemon curd. So tasty! My recipe for Lemon Curd is below. It takes some time to make, but is well worth it, I assure you. It can be frozen for up to 6 months as well. I just made a batch tonight and filled up empty baby food jars, to give as gifts.
Enjoying each other's company and catching up on life.
The centerpiece. These little white birds just finish it off.
and yes, if you look closely, that is a bed spread!! I found it at a garage sale this past summer and just love it! Normally it's thrown over our couch, but since I didn't have a tablecloth large enough for this table, I took it from it's place and thought it worked just fine!!

LEMON CURD:
4 lemons
1 ¾ cups sugar
1 ½ cups butter
4 eggs, beaten

Into heatproof bowl, finely grate zest of lemons. Squeeze lemons and pour juice into bowl. Stir in sugar. Cut butter into small pieces and add to the other ingredients.

Set bowl over a saucepan one-quarter filled with simmering water and stir until butter has melted and sugar dissolved. Strain eggs into lemon mixture.

Cook gently, stirring frequently, 10-15 minutes, until mixture is thick and creamy. Pour into clean, warm jars and seal while hot. Keep in the refrigerator or you can freeze for up to 6 months.

Theater Thursday

From the maker of this video which made me cry with laughter: "This was the opening video done at a retreat called "You've Got Talent." Everyone is asking what inspired this. Here is goes... 1) We needed a great opening video that caught everyone off guard, and set the the tone for the weekend. 2) With this idea in mind, we thought we could use this video as a great object lesson about media choices (kinda creepy hearing your grandparents sing some of this), and 3) this has been a GREAT transgenerational culture experiment. It has totally bridged a gap with our Senior adults and our students. Hope you enjoy!

P.s. a big shout out to Sam for introducing me!!

Sibling Breakfast

Two of my siblings and I share November birthdays. For the past few years we've made it a tradition to meet for breakfast, all 8 of us! We usually meet at The Kling House, a great little restaurant in a local town. It's quiet, quaint and delicious. This year we got my brother Tom an original newspaper from the DAY he was born! It came in this great portfolio. It was so interesting to see what the news of his day was. We purchased it here. It's a really great gift idea for the history buff in your family or just for anyone really.

I love my family. We are each so unique and yet we fit together and balance each other so well. We are patches in the same quilt....sewn next to each other. I'm thankful for this beautiful quilt to keep me warm and safe during this life on earth. I love you Mel, Fan, Chet, Leon, Tom, Jan and Von! (that's the birth order).

My new apron!!

Last night some of my girlfriends and I got together to exchange Christmas gifts. A few weeks ago we had picked names. One of my friends, Dana, just recently started sewing. She made an apron for each of us! She amazingly captured each personality within the apron! It was so much fun seeing each one and trying them on. Four of us are quite pregnant right now and even so, they fit just perfectly! Can you pick out the little baby bumps?? I wore mine the rest of the evening, I didn't want to take mine off. I LOVE IT!! Thank you once again Dana! You are truly talented!!!

My 30th Birthday Getaway!

Jake surprised me and told me to pack an overnight bag on my birthday. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I was delighted just be going away for the night, only him and I. He took me to Leola Village Inn and Suites, a local, beautifully restored Inn. We checked into the BRIDAL suite....oh my goodness, it was amazing!! The room is practically the size of our entire downstairs! I was so honored to be spending the night in such an exquisite room. We began our time with complimentary wine and cheese. We ate at Mazzi's, the lovely French Italian Restaurant that is connected to the Inn. I wish I had taken more pictures, but I was just so caught up in the loveliness of it all. I would have been completely satisfied with all those wonderful gifts, but he said I was to change into something a bit more dressy and that we had one more place to go. He had me close my eyes and drove me around lots of country back roads until I was totally lost as to where I was. We stopped and he guided me out of the truck and into a room where all my family and friends were gathered for a surprise party! It was held at Chabod Academy, where I teach Drama and work with the theater department. It was really neat to be there for something unrelated to work. The tables were beautifully decorated and the food was displayed so creatively, (thanks to my sisters!!!!). I blew out all my candles, (which my brother almost burned himself trying to get lit....thanks Tom)! I had to take two breaths to get them all blown out....I guess I'll get use to that from now on. The cake was the most delicious chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting I had ever tasted! There was a stunning floral arrangement in the cutest little green vintage vase. Jake had gone to Lulu and Tutz and bought this vase off my "wish list" and had it filled with flowers! What a SWEET and thoughtful gesture! He is so kind to me. I enjoyed the company of my friends and family and opened my darling gifts. (Pictured above: my oldest sister Fan with our newest addition, Bennett and my lovely niece Megan). I will seriously be doing another post to show you all the CREATIVE, LOVELY, BEAUTIFUL, THOUGHTFUL gifts I received! I can't stop looking at all my new things! As we speak I am wearing the GORGEOUS pair of shoes from my friend Jena!! (notice my baby bump starting to peek out....I'm almost 20 weeks preggo already!!) And thank you to Jeane for my stunning bracelet you see as well! I'm telling you, I've received a virtual boutique of goodness!!!Another "gift" was a birthday shout out from Bryan over at this site. He's a fun, smart, humble, hilarious, truthful guy who writes well. He married a friend of mine and we use to go to church together. Anyway, it was nice of him to take some time to say happy day to me! Thanks Bryan. The beginning of my 30th year was so special! I couldn't have thought of a better way to celebrate! Thank you my sweet Jake for taking the extra time and energy to plan this surprise for me. I know you are busy with many, many details at work and yet you took the time to carefully and lovingly celebrate me! ~I love you for life~

Jam Session with Daddy

This has been the scene most every night after dinner in our household. Luke has suddenly fallen in love with the guitar which is fabulous to us. I will say it causes a bit of disruption come Sunday mornings though, when Jake and I are on the worship team. We've come to the conclusion that it's just best if only ONE of us is on the team on a given week, (the other one to keep Luke occupied so as to not sprint forward to the stage...which has happened during a moment of closing the eyes)! It's really cute to see him run down here each morning wanting to play. He has to wait until Daddy comes home from work though, so as soon as he hears Jake come home, he is at the door pointing toward the guitar! I'm pretty sure we know what we're getting him for Christmas!

P.s. gotta love those last few seconds as Jake puts the pick in his mouth, "no, don't put it in your mouth!"

Thanksgiving

We spend Thanksgiving day at my sisters home, Carl & Fan Smucker. It's always such an anticipated time for me. Although we are a large family, the clamour of laughter and noise that ensue is heartwarming to me. The more, the merrier as far as I'm concerned!! We eat, (of course) and then the men go off to their corner to play "Rook" for an ungodly amount of time. The rest of us sit and chat about life, (while I chase my boys around a.) keeping them out of the toilet, b.) keeping them from feeding grass to the dog, c.) stopping them from turning the ice tea faucet on full force without a cup underneath or d.) all of the above). We head home late, in our gingerbread footsie pj's, weary from digesting and laughing too much in one night!
I am often mindful that we are all still here, still living and breathing and embracing this life on earth. As my sister says, "our circle is unbroken." I know that there are many facing times of deep pain and sadness during the Holiday season. Times of grief too deep for words, longing to be with their families, visiting gravesides, looking at the pictures that will keep them alive in their mind or maybe being in the hospital instead of around the dinner table. All these things are vivid to me and I am grateful most of all for my family.....all of us still sitting at that table on this side of heaven.
