Ski tags

A few nights ago Jake and I went to Olive Garden's. We took his nephew and his wife out to dinner and enjoyed our time so much. You see, they just left the Amish a few months ago, and are in the middle of transitioning their entire life, their mindset and their very way of living. She just got her permit a few weeks ago, she's 23. He has new shirts and a haircut. They are brave.

(pictures taken at the local Farm Show.....a huge indoor arena that is transformed once a year and dedicated to all things farming).

It's no easy thing to pick up your very way of living and CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. I'm not trying to say that they are better now because they are no longer Amish. I know there are many conservative readers here and my point in talking about this is to share their journey, not to cast judgement on yours. There are many Amish and "English", (what the Amish call the non-Amish) people who need freedom. Outward appearances can be deceiving to what's truly going on inside; from tattoos and leather to cape dresses and bonnets.

As we were waiting to be seated, in walked a group of young girls, maybe 16 or 17 years old. I noticed the one girl because she sort of reminded me of myself at that age. She was surrounded by her friends and sort of leaning her head against her one friends shoulder, (something I would have done and still do). I show affection. I'm a hugger. Always have been, always will be.

The thing that caught my eye the most were the ski tags on her shiny red North Face jacket. I use to do that too. Go skiing, yes, because I liked to ski, but probably more to get one of those lift passes that I could then wear on my jacket for the rest of the Winter for all to see, (preferably 3-4 would do the trick).

(I want to be as cool as these ladies).

I even joined FFA, (Future Farmers of America) to go on the FREE ski trip, hilarious and sad, but true. I did come to enjoy FFA though despite my ulterior motives! I met a whole new *group* of people I would have otherwise not met. Sat with some new people at the sacred lunch table in the cafeteria! I got to compete in the tug-of-war at the Lampeter Fair and came to enjoy country line dancing at good ol' Low Places! I learned to sport cowboy boots, (the ones my brother Tom purchased for me when I turned 16 and just pulled out of the attic last week to wear to the Farm Show, along with a triple strand of pink pearls of course)! HA HA!! Those were the days!

(above mentioned boots!!)

Her ski tags got me thinking, what tags do I wear in my life now to gain the approval or nod of others? Just like it was back then, but perhaps not so obvious, (well, maybe it's obvious to others and not to myself). You know, like having well behaved children or a clean house. Having a garden or a nice blog. Being influential or inspirational. Maybe for you it's your husbands job, your desire for control, your looks, your income, shopping, gossiping, your career, what you wear, where you live, who your friends are, whether or not your children love Jesus, whether or not you have children, the church you go to, the church you don't go to, traveling, spiritual authority, knowledge, even our soul freedom or the pursuit of it....all that STUFF we do to keep our approval ratings high.

(YES~that is made out of BUTTER)!!

Non of these things are *bad* in and of themselves. However, if I feel that I have to maintain them in order to maintain affection or love or acceptance, then it's not ok. It's bondage.

It's loving what we THINK others will love, talking the way we THINK others would want to hear, parenting the way we THINK others would want, going to church because we THINK we should, or just dressing a certain way because of what others will THINK. In some cases this is true, as with the Amish, there are definite things that will change, (for example, being shunned for the rest of your life) so the decision SEEMS like a bigger deal, (and it is, I am not belittling the drastic decision one must make).

Sometimes I wish I had a more sure way of seeing the changes in myself. Like literally wearing a new type of clothing, an entirely new wardrobe because of the decisions I've made!! Relatively speaking, my decisions are easy to come by. Maybe that's what Jesus' dear friend meant when he said:

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14

Those attributes aren't as easily noticed as ski tags,

but then again,
maybe they are.

Making Applesauce

I DID IT, MY FIRST YEAR MAKING APPLESAUCE WITHOUT MY MOM'S HELP!!!

I have the "youngest-of-8 children" syndrome in which I feel I can do no *difficult* thing without my Mother. And by difficult, I mean canning. To me, she is the MASTER, she doesn't have any instruction book she follows, she effortlessly flows from one task to the next until she has 200 quarts of applesauce sitting before her. I'm just along for the ride. Seriously.

But I decided I better grow up and this was the year I did.

Now, mind you, my two Amish nieces VOLUNTEERED to join me....or shall I say, rescued me.

It's a main point that they are Amish because they've been making applesauce/canning since they could use a knife, which was probably age 5. They instinctively know what they're doing.

I didn't even know how to cut the apple up without wasting 1/2 of it.
They kindly showed me.
And I watched carefully.

They came into my kitchen and told me what to do.

And I enjoyed every minute of it....THANK YOU ANNIE & BETTY, YOU WERE A BLAST to work alongside, you helped me learn a new thing today and gave me the confidence to do it! And you gave of your time and energy to stock OUR pantry....BLESS YOUR HEARTS!!!

Until next year.....

12 miles to Freedom.

I met a woman today that just saw her Mother for the first time in almost 2 years.

They live 12 miles from one another.

The decisions she and her husband have made to leave the Amish culture
has resulted in pain and rejection that many of us will never know.
I saw strength & courage in her eyes and heard the hurt in her voice, still thick with accent.

I don't understand it and yet it surrounds me.
This heritage that flows through my veins and has made me who I am today.

There is SO MUCH BEAUTY in it and yet there is a darkness that hides just below waiting to smother you or abandon you the minute you step out of line, out of tradition into a new longing for freedom.

I won't pretend to know what I'm talking about. All I know is what I see and what I journey through with those around me, those hurting souls that are in my circle of influence. Those men and women taking THE LEAP OF THEIR LIFE into the unknown.

New wardrobes.
New shoes.
New hair dos.

the basic items of identity are TRANSFORMED, can you even imagine the hidden places of the heart and mind that can't be seen by others? The SUPERNATURAL TRANSFORMATION that needs, (and will) take place right inside there? THE SOUL FREEDOM that takes years, possibly even a lifetime to sink in?

MARINATE IN FREEDOM AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS!!!

To any of "you" that may be reading this, to those of you that are in this place right now, (or have come out the other side) this DECISION MAKING TIME of turning your lives upside down and changing everything you've ever known.....I admire you more then words can even express.

There are moments when my personal desire for a deeper freedom is so intense and I'm not even dealing with the *superficial* aspects of it all.

Selling my horse and carriage for a car.
Teaching my children to speak English, (and not Dutch) when they are spoken to.
Contemplating the reactions of those around you that you love the most, your very Father and Mother.

You have COURAGE I will never know.

MAY ALL YOUR DESIRES FOR A NEW FOUND FREEDOM BE FOUND & CELEBRATED!!!

YOU
ARE
NOT
ALONE.

Dear Lord, let Your nearness be evident!!!

"He sent from above, He took me, He drew me out of MANY WATERS. He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me. They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD WAS MY STAY. He brought me forth also INTO A LARGE PLACE; He delivered me, BECAUSE HE DELIGHTED IN ME."
Psalm 18: 16-19

Little cabin in the woods

We had a delightful time earlier this Summer with some dear friends of ours....friends that are cooler then the flip side of our pillow!
They have a beautiful cabin in the woods....perhaps it shouldn't be called that though,
because it's more like a HOME away from home.
We're not talkin' deer heads on the wall here....MaryJo works for Ethan Allen so that may give you a little idea as to what it looks like!! This is a yearly tradition so here's a glimpse of the place from last years post. And here's a post about a more "fancy" night we had together with our oldest children! Let's do it again MJ!!!
This particular day we went for a walk together when suddenly, from over the hill comes this Amish woman, probably mid 60's just running....fast!! As in, I'm out for a run to get some exercise, in her dress and all, big smile on her face, keeping great pace. You go girl!!!!
We were all a bit shocked.
Watch Out!!
It's HOT!! ;)
Making a HUGE dinner over the fire pit is a highlight of our time there!

doing what we do best~~
RELAXING AND LAUGHING
and letting the kids make a mess!!

Caught red handed!!!

Looking forward to enjoying this yearly tradition until we're not 'cool' anymore and our kids want to stay at home while we go! :(

OH, ONE MORE THING~~~THE 500TH POST FOR THREE MEN & THEIR LADIES IS AROUND THE CORNER SO IT'S GIVEAWAY TIME AGAIN,
CHECK BACK IN ABOUT A WEEK!!! FUN TIMES AHEAD!!!!

Can I get a little help around here??

Sometimes I wish I had a maid.
I often tell my Mom that I could be like those Amish women
who have 10 kids if I had a "maut" (PA Dutch for "maid") like they do....
being a maid as a young Amish girl is a given....it's something you do to help other women in your community, but mostly to learn the "tricks of the trade." Not a bad idea. It must not intimidate the young girls that much because they turn around, get married and have 10 kids themselves!!

My Mom remembers well being one and having one when she was a young Amish Mother. Granted, most Amish women have a much more *physical* job with huge gardens, doing laundry by hand, canning, helping with the farm, having lots of children in a short amount of time, etc. So they really do NEED the help in ways we "English" Moms might not. Actually, that same description applies to several of my friends and family that AREN'T Amish, so how about we English folks integrate some form of maid service? Hey, I can dream.

Well, I may not have a maid.
But I do have a 5 year old.
And a 3 year old.
And a 1 year old.

This is their *job*....

to take the dirty laundry from upstairs and throw it down the steps.
What 5 and 3 year old boys wouldn't LOVE this "job"??

Understandably, it turns into a sliding board.

And a swimming pool.

and a leaf pile.

oh, sweet imagination!!!

Next, they take it from the steps and throw it into the laundry room.

Finally, it's gathered into a pile and I take it from there.

Thanks for your help kids....
I'll take all I can get!!!

*So, you're having a baby at home and the midwife doesn't make in time.

Summer Nights

This Summer we hosted more parties then any other Summer I can remember.

It was wonderful.

I think it's because we weren't in the middle of a newborn phase as we have been the past several years: March 07 Luke was born. April 09 Paisley was born. Two Summers spent in sleepless nights and glazed over days! It's nice to be use to this new normal and we're enjoying it immensely. If you're in the newborn phase, don't worry, you will sleep again and you will have people over to your home again, (if that's something you enjoy doing)!! One of my favorite things
is to entertain people here at our home.
Have I introduced you to Sadie yet?
She was so good to me this Summer.

Keeping drinks on ice &
carrying my goodies home from market
.

Some days I would just stare at her out my kitchen window as she leaned against the gazebo
and long to ride her down the road, "fly the coop" so to speak.... but alas, I had 3 children here at home so I just rode her around the yard. I looked pathetic I know, but I didn't care!

Dinner with the Stolzfus Crew under the walnut trees.

Hummer by firelight.
I've always loved entertaining....ever since I was about 5 years old.

Seriously, I use to play for hours on end having people to my fabulous"play houses." Under the pine trees on Zook Road I would serve my friends mud, meadow tea and marigold pies. I still get sent back in time when I smell fresh meadow tea leaves and marigolds.
My Mom was so gracious, (or ignorant to the fact) that I had 1/2 the kitchen out there with me.....her measuring cups & spoons, real dishes and utensils and cups, pots and pans, the telephone and even the living room couch one time, (I still don't know how the heck I got that thing out there)!! *someone from my past please comment and tell me your remember this??*

And some of my friends that I served when I was 5,
I served again this Summer in the shade of our gazebo.
Oh Happy heart.
Friends are the sweetness of my life.

One this particular Summer's Eve Jake's brother and his wife and some of their friends were visiting from Canada. We don't get to see Sam and Cheryl very often so our time together is short, but very sweet. Jake and his brother Sam are about as opposite as you get and it's a BLAST being together, they bring out the best in each other. Just look at them! Isn't it hilarious?? I love it!
Reuben, Sam, Jake
Proud Mama with her 4 children,
Reuben, Sam, Nancy, Jake.

Sam is such a fun guy, he's not afraid to be completely himself and he loves to surprise everyone! One night he and Cheryl and his friends showed up to a party in complete Amish gear....
horse and buggy and all.
We laughed and laughed.

Only Sam.

We miss you all already!!!!

Their friends look so authentic, don't you think??

We approached their buggy on the way to this party and I said,
"honey, look at that couple, if we were Amish that's the colors we would wear,
bright orange!
"

Then as we passed them, I said, "WAIT....THAT WAS SAM & CHERYL!!!!"
It was awesome!!

Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light..."
